MLB Showdown 2013: Corner OF +300 Points

Corner outfield is always interesting for a few reasons. The first reason is there are both power and speed options at this position. The second is you have to choose two players for the position. The third is there is a limited defensive impact and most players are average. The fourth is all centerfielders qualify as a corner outfielder. Yasiel Puig is a very exciting new prospect. We can only hope his 19 homer, 2 triple, 21 double, 11 stolen base year in 432 PA is hopefully a sign of things to come. I am hoping for a young Jose Canseco. Carlos Gonzalez hit 26 homers, 6 triples, 23 doubles with 21 SB as a solid year (though down by his standards). Matt Holiday is Matt Holiday. Justin Upton was on pace for 80 homers for the first month of the season and finished with 27 homers. BJ Upton was on pace to be playing in the Japanese league after the first month of the season and he finished in the league.

Power hitters have more options than years past. Puig, Werth and Holiday are inefficient options. Holiday is the best option as a 5-6 hitter option as a 19-20 HR, 16-18 2B for 430 points as a speed B(15) LF/RF+1 for 430 points … for the fifth time. Jose Bautista is the best option to protect Cabrera/Davis. For 460 points you get a 9 17-20 HR with LF/RF+2 as a speed B(15). Carlos Gonzalez is a 9 18-20 HR, 16-17 3B, 14-15 2B speed A (20) with LF/RF+2 for 500 points. He is more of a XHB hitter than pure home run hitter. Nelson Cruz as a 7 16-20 HR, 14-15 2B for a speed A(18) LF/RF+1 for 340 points is an interesting 6-7 hitter. You could easily sport a Cabrera, Bautista, Cruz line-up where they bat 3/4/6 respectively for 1,520 points. That is tight but enough to find a decent 5 hitter and some cheap OB for 1-2 spot.

Pingers traditionally don’t like to be in the 300+ point range. There is are some uses as a 3-4 hitter with a bit more power than the usual 9, 20 HR for 250 points here. Giancarlo Stanton as a 9, 19-20 HR, 17-18 2B as a speed B(14) LF/RF+1 for 310 points is a nice slight upgrade. Will Myers for 330 points gets a 9, speed B(15) with 19-20 HR, 16-18 2B and LF/RF+0. Likely most players will prefer Stanton. Holiday is always a great 3 hitter. Moneyballers also may like Holliday. Both parties are looking for next week when we talk about the cheaper options.

Small ballers will have some exciting middle of the order options. Yasiel Puig and Jayson Werth are both 10, 19-20 HR, 17-18 2B speed A. Werth is a A(19) with LF/RF+1 for 500 points. Puig is a A(18) LF/RF+2 for 510 points. Puig singles with 7 or above. Gonzalez is good pick here. Harper is not worth the extra points over Justin Upton. Upton is a 9 19-20 HR, 17-18 2B speed A(19) LF/RF+1 for 340 points. Harper is 80 points more for smaller out and one 11 as a single instead of Upton’s 12. I still prefer upton but both are options even on the same team.

No punts at this price level but next week we have that highlighted.
