I have to say we had a pretty eventful #Shotsfriday last week. Myself and the MLB Showdown Connoisseur, @kylevanpelt went to the Braves vs Phillies game. It was the opening day of the Olympics so we went to the very same place where Michael Johnson wore his shiny gold shoes. It is now known as Turner Field. It was the Olympic Track for the 1996 Olympics. All that to say in the 5th inning as I recall the Braves do a promotion called Moe's home run inning. Kyle had picked Brian McCann based information he had gathered from his wife. Long story short, McCann hit a home run on #Shotsfriday for @kylevanpelt during Moe's home run inning. So Kyle gets a tally and I got a burrito. Our favorite Texan @LU_TX12 did a smart thing and picked a player our leader @Quicksand3 picked. Both picked Curtis Granderson. @IamPulseivity both listened to a young lady and followed out leader with Granderson. @Quicksand3 has a monster lead on the twitter board with 4. Granderson went from dog house to penthouse this week taking the Player-board lead with 3. @LU_TX12 got his first but he assures me "My guys play for me". Our local celebrity, "The Creator", @TomWyliehart may not be over his MLB Showdown hill yet. He picked Josh Willingham. That would be number 1 for both. Big week for out #Shotsfriday players. Remember to send in your pick for today using the Twitter #Shotsfriday before the game starts. Now on to business.
Last
week we proposed the idea of letting people earn their own Pro-cards according
to our sites with different benefits for each level of dedication. I do say
that I am starting the year with a 3 man staff at the moment. With new members
who may be added for various reasons over time. You guys will usually be
familiar with them for their contributions to the blog. I would like to congradulate
The
first member of our team is Kyle “The Connoisseur” Van Pelt. Kyle was not an
active member while the game was actually being printed. He adopted the game in
the summer of 2006 after it had been discontinued. Kyle with his degree in
Sports Management loves assembling winners. Kyle is in talks with Paramount
pictures about filming “Moneyball 2: The Showdown”. The plot is based on real
events and the opening scene is Kyle sending his own mother to live with Kyle’s
brother. For this trade Kyle received the number 1 pick in his draft and
selected Juan Guzman. Kyle once informed me that he had forgotten more about
winning then I had ever known. The source of his success is his dedication. I
can say it is true that he got his MLB Showdown charts printed and leather
bound so that he could bring it to study during church. I asked once how
valueable he thought the Wins Above Replacement(WAR) stat was worth. His reply
was that the only stat that mattered to him was just Wins.
The
second member of our team is Mark “Doctor Juice” Krom. Mark did not know about
MLB Showdown till the summer of 2008. Mark was a lifelong baseball fan and
smart enough to understand basic probability. Mark is a power addict. He has plenty of gonadotropin in his blood,
if you know what I mean, to select low on-base, high power players to lead
almost any league in long balls. Mark will scour for power, and encourage
others to do likewise. Mark believes that players should play to the best of
their abilities and maybe even better than their abilities. I am not saying
that I once walked into a room and saw Mark in the dark with a 20 sided dice
and a syringe. I will say that there are rumors that Jeffery Hammonds was an 8
before “Doctor Juice” gave him light tower power. Mark is a life-long Yankees fan and has
learned 1 truth from that. Good players are going to win, great players win
with style.
Eddie Melville is the longest tenured MLB Showdown player on
this team excluding myself. He played the original set. I once traded for the 6
control, 8 IP Curt Schilling from Eddie. He is our great left handed reliever.
Eddie often sits out in the bullpen in his own little world we call “The
Eddiezone”. Eddie will blur between madness and genius. Many a man has driven
themselves insane trying to catch Eddie in a trap during a Showdown draft. They
do this only to find themselves ensnared and stuck in “The Eddiezone” for the
remainder of the league season. Eddie in his first draft of 2000 selected in
order Pedro Martinez, Kevin Brown, Curt Schilling and Roger Clemens. His 5th
pick came around and everyone had gobbled up hitters. Eddie drafted Randy
Johnson. Players who could not believe the lack of starting pitching depth then
traded Eddie, Brian Giles and Larry Walker for Randy Johnson and agreed to eat
half of each player’s salary. Do not take this Pro lightly folks.
Now if that doesn't inspire you toward greatness I do not know what will. Those 3 titans in the MLB Showdown world aid and assist me more then I can ever tell you guys. Our staff always growing. We have 2 more official pros who will have bios put up here some time soon. You can work your way toward being a pro yourself by being active and showing your knowledge or passion for MLB Showdown around the community.
