MLB Showdown: Custom Cards
One of
our great fans who for the moment is twitter-less I believe has commissioned 10
new cards to be added to the MLB Showdown world. We have seen what can happen
when someone goes and makes 10 of their favorite players from their favorite
team. The Seattle Mariner’s greats are still on the blog for everyone to enjoy.
They are joined now with the inevitable. Someone has unleashed the titans.
These are 10 of the greatest seasons ever and thus 10 of the greatest Showdown
cards ever.
Babe Ruth 1927- It
was only a matter of time before someone requested one of the legendary seasons
in baseball history. From 1927 till 1961 this was viewed as maybe the most
prestigious record in all of sports. Even to the point where some did not
regard Roger Maris’s 1961 season as a legitimate heir. Little did they know
then that McGwire would hold it in 1998 with even more controversy and Bonds in
2001 would have even more controversy. Enough about them, let’s give the Babe his
due. The most impressive stat to me about that season? Maris, McGwire and Bonds
had 6 combined triples in their record breaking season’s. Babe Ruth had 8 in
1927. He earned himself the most powerful card in existence with only Maris 61,
Mcgwire 98, Sosa 98 and Bonds 01 have a chance to tie this level(the WotC card
is based on 2000 stats). This guy is obviously an animal getting on base and
hitting more homers than anyone.
Hank Aaron 1971- In
1971 Hank Aaron was slowing down as much as he was going to slow down as a
player. He was beginning to lose speed and seeing more time at 1B. He would have
his most powerful home run season though with 47 home runs. The 21 time all-star
(that is correct) and future all-time home run king earned himself a pretty
darn good card for being at the end of his rope. His 10, 17-20 HR, 16 2B for
570 points is a pretty good bargain. Yeah you have to put up with old man speed
and old man defense but he can hit so he deserve action.
Cy Young 1901- Cy
Young is currently our oldest player… which I find ironic. He also shows a
completely different era of baseball. He would pitch a meager 371.1 innings in
1901 with a 1.62 ERA while going 33-10. We can argue era’s and talent levels
and all that till we are blue in the face. Instead we followed our own rules
and created as we would normally. He earned himself the greatest horse card
ever. There is no way you will need a bullpen with this guy on the mound. His
6, 1-15 out, 16-20 1B is going to give up some runs but not too many. His 9 IP
makes him the only one of our current legal cards which can do that. He is 780
points which is very expensive but think of all the points you will save on a
bullpen. Not a lot of strike outs, needs a good catcher. We have heard all this
before.
Greg Maddux 1995- People
forget that before there was Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens were
the greatest pitchers on earth. Some would say Maddux is the greatest pure
pitcher of the 90’s. His 1.63 ERA and league leading 209.2 innings were beast.
He earned himself a more effective version of the Cy Young 1901 card. He loses
2 IP for 1 extra out on the chart. As a 6, 1-16 out with 17-20 1B it is tough
to score on him. His 1-7 none advancing out is tough enough and for 720 points
he is affordable-ish. I think he is worth a look.
Chipper Jones 1997- Everyone has some nostalgia. Our fans are
Braves fans and asked for one of the Braves all-time greats. This was a young
Chipper with a lot more speed than those of us who watched the end of his
career will remember. He was big, strong, fast, with a good eye and serviceable
glove. He could hit for power and average. He would go on to live up to the
bill. He earned himself the most reasonable card of this lot with an 8, speed A(20),
19-20 HR, 18 3B, 14-17 2B, 13 1B+ for 300 points. He can bat in combo line-ups
looking for speed and power. He is also a fan favorite don’t overlook that if
you are just trying to have fun.

This is awesome! Love all these cards, but the Babe Ruth is legendary! In a pure league, great, in a league with strategy cards, dominant!
ReplyDeleteThat Babe Ruth card is awesome. I don't know if I would use 780 pts. on one hitter, but man would it be fun when he came up to bat.
ReplyDeleteHe is worth the points. As for Young and Maddux, which one would you prefer?
DeleteGlanced really quickly at the Cy Young and thought it was a Babe Ruth as a pitcher card (despite the wrong handedness, the Red Sox part would have been right) and was very entertained
