Time Machine Pitchers 200-290 points
Brett Tomko 00- This is another
section where we will spot light odd looking charts for this point range. Tomko
holds the oddest chart because he has the worst chart of anyone in all of
Showdown. Him and Neagle tie with 3 extra base hits on the chart but the tie
breaker is his 17 is a single where Neagle has 2 walks. For 230 points he is a
steal compared to Neagle but he is going to get torched. 6 innings, 1-15 out,
1-7 none advancing are all average. Hope someone else drafts this bad boy and
punish him with 15% of your rolls going to extra base hits.
Robert person 01- On the opposite
end of the spectrum we have Robert Person who is a fantastic deal for a 3 or 4
starter. 290 points for a 4, 1-15 out. That alone is a 330 point value for a
player like Aaron Sele. For 40 points less you get not 1 walk on his chart but
3. 16-18 BB, 19 1B, 20 2B. So you have to assume the outs are horrible right? Not
at all with a 1-8 none advancing, 9-11 GB, 12-15 FB. None of the 330 point
starters have a 1-8 none advancing. This guy is tough to play small ball
against. Put this guy on your radar early and you will not regret it. Pair him
with Kerry Wood (1), Blake Stein (2) and Gil Meche (3) to form a 1,610 point rotation
that will outperform some 2,000 pointers.
Randy Keisler 01P- You want an
average pitcher who does nothing spectacular but is steady for cheap? Randy
Keisler for 210 points. 3 control, 6 innings, 1-15 out, 16-17 BB, 18-19 1B, 20
2B. Very average there paired with 1-6 none advancing, 7-11 GB, 12-15 FB. You
could pay 240 points for a worse version of the same player. 30 points is a
world of a difference when trying to maximize on all the bats in the old cards.
Side note: Keilser pitched a whole 10.2 innings with a 11+ ERA in 2000. Just
goes to show there is a lot of difficulty in projecting out how well or much a
rookie will play.
Hideo Nomo 2001- This guy was a
sight to see pitch. “the tornado” as some referred to him was exactly that. This
oddly timed series of arms and legs coming at you with a bit twist. His career
numbers were pretty mediocre considering he beat out Chipper Jones for the
Rookie of the Year award. Anyone who watched Nomo would tell you that every
once or twice a year something would click and he would be the best pitcher in
the league for a night. He has 2 no-hitters in parks that are traditionally
known as hitters parks in Coors Field and Camden Yards. He made people look bad
every so often. It could be the odd delivery but ether way the guy could play. For 290 you
can get a 2, 1-17, 18 BB, 19 1B, 20 2B. 1-3 PU, 4-9 K, 10-13 GB, 14-17 FB are
all good things for 6 innings. I think he is worth a look as a 4 starter for
some brave souls. Who knows maybe he throws one of those special games for you.
Jimmy Andreson 01- I am falling
more and more in love with this card the more I look at it. He is a 1, he only
pitches 5 innings and he costs 230 points. Why do I love him so much? Largest
GB out in all of Showdown with a 5-14 GB… I repeat 5-14 GB. What makes that
even better is his 18 BB, 19-20 1B… No one gets to second base on his chart.
Hope people walk and you can punish them with that ground ball double play. For
those of us who love to stack the defense 10+ on the infield this guy is going
to be a menace in terms of a 4 starter. All that being said he is a 1 control
and will give up some runs but so will a lot of other 4 starters.
Robert Person was on all of my teams growing up. Might have to give Jimmy Anderson a 2nd look, never really considered him before.
