Fernando Tatis 00: Some players really make you scratch your head about how they earned the cards they did. Tatis known as a serviceable backup infielder for much of his career had a tank of a thirdbase card in 2000. The reason? In 1999 he would have more than a fourth of his career homers with 34 of his 113. He would have over 40% of his steals with 21 of his 50 career steals. Not to mention 107 of his 448 RBI. All this was aided by his 2 grand slam inning in 1999. He earned a 10, speed A, 18-20 HR, 16-17 2B, 15 1B+ with +1 fielding for 570 points. He can do a lot of good things at a hefty tag.

MLB Showdown 2012: Thirdbase

History was made at this position. Miguel Cabrera became the first person to win the Triple Crown primarily playing third base. His .330 BA, 44 HR and 139 RBI will be etched in baseball lore forever. This is no small feat which we should all appreciate and if nothing else this feat should mean Cabrera makes the Hall of Fame if he retires tomorrow. The single season award obviously goes to Cabrera. The life time achievement award goes to Chipper Jones. Chipper put together a classy season where he struggled through injuries but was productive when playing. I can’t imagine too many people think about baseball as much as Chipper does, I feel so sorry for his wife this next season if he doesn’t find a hobby. Chase Headley a Showdown favorite added Power to his resume with 25 homers this year. Kevin Youkilis, the “greek god of walks” lost his OBP stroke for the year.

#ShotsFriday

We discussed in an earlier #ShotsFriday post about 3 players the A’s let go in the famous book Moneyball. The three players the A’s General Manager, Billy Beane allowed to leave via free agency were Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon and Jason Isringhausen after the 2001 season. These players were all productive players to leave the A’s for greener pastures. That would be money green not Athletics green. The challenging task in front of the staff was to replace their production at a fraction of the price. The answer were these 3 players (among others).

#ShotsFriday

Small Ballers play a style that most baseball purest can appreciate. They for the most part don’t expect pure luck to carry them where they want to get. Instead they create their own luck. They expect every player to be productive in their own way. These guys are looking to score extra runs one at a time. They may tally a few together but they make their money stealing extra runs. In my humble opinion this is the most effective strategy for actually winning consistently in Showdown.

The model for the lead-off hitter is not original here but it is definitely more important than most other teams. These guys put an absolute premium on the 10, speed A player or sometimes a 9, speed A +20. Sometimes this position is so important you will see them doubled up. Pair of players cut from the same cloth is going score many more runs than they will drive in. The guys will be able to steal their way into scoring position. Is any of that really original to a Small Ball line-up? No not really.

What is original to this line-up become more apparent as we work down the line-up. The duel threat player tends to be the 3 hitter in the Small Ball line-ups. These guys are going to drive in plenty of runs but also need score runs themselves. These guys have speed, power and high hits. These are expensive players but they are the true duel threats. After this the 4 hitter is going to have more singles than anything else. The emphasis is on a low number on the chart for a single. Power is not nearly as important to this line-up as singles are because the three guys in front of him will score on hits.

The 5-6 hitters tend to have a bit more speed than the average line-up would have. These guys are going to be speed A players who can steal their way into scoring position. They may not have high on-base but they will have good speed. Don’t be surprised to see some lower on-base +20 speed players. Guys who can get on base against the pitchers chart.

The 7-8-9 hitters are going to be cheap guys with speed and likely fielding. They may not be big hitters. For sub 200 point hitters these guys are going to try and punish pitchers on their own chart. They also are going to try and minimize how many runs the other team is going to score. This is usually a place where tough to draft positions find punts. The punts are going to be very intentional. Speed and fielding with almost no chart to speak of. The difference between the bottom and top of the order is the top can score on hits and outs where the bottom is living of scoring runs off outs and luck.

Gary Disarcina 00: This guy became a Showdown cult icon. Put on the Mount Rushmore of Showdown remembered players right next to Juan Guzman, Jeffery Hammonds and Terry Shumpert. In 1999 he hit an impressive .229 with a slugging and OBP of .273 (oddly enough they are the same). His 1 homer and 1 triple in nearly 300 AB’s in a time when people were hitting bombs at will left little room for him in the league. He would retire after the 2000 season. He actually finished 19th in the MVP voting in 1995 and was named an All-star. Fan Elorater ranks him as the 1454th best hitter ever between Casey Kotchman and Ty Wigginton. His Showdown card is a legendary 5, speed B, 4-20 1B, 3 BB, 2 FB, 1 GB for 40 points. Maybe it was because he was the cheapest SS in Showdown at the time (by 70 points, and in the 00 set) besides the Christian Guzman card who had almost no use. It could have been his pretty good fielding or maybe it was his amazingly unorthodox chart. No matter why people loved him he is a legend of the game.

MLB Showdown 2012: Shortstop

Shortstop is a tough position for Showdown. It is not cheap to hit and great fielders are sometimes very flawed players. First things first, Derek Jeter is the ageless wonder. Nomar Garciaparra is announcing games now, A-rod is a shell of a shell of his former self now. Derek Jeter? 216 hits, 15 home runs, 32 doubles and .316 average. I am not sure anyone has anything but respect for one of the games great ambassadors. They king of shortstop mountain has not been Derek Jeter the last few years however. That person has been Troy Tulowitzki. Tulo was hurt a majority of the year but was productive in short time. The kid who stepped up? Ian Desmond had 25 homers and 21 steals to help the Nasty Nats make the playoffs. Jose Reyes could not match the other-worldly year he put up last year but was still a productive player. Not to toot our very own Dr. Juice’s horn but the Marlins did bat Reyes third toward the end of the year to put him in more RBI spots… that is why Dr. Juice is a pro ladies and gentlemen.

#ShotsFriday
The “Money Ball” as a philosophy that has many celebrities. There is Billy Beane, the pioneer, the first person of baseball merit to actually execute the philosophy successfully. There is Michael Lewis the author of the book which many of us, including myself, speak of highly though never actually read. Finally there is Bill James, The Father of Sabermetrics as many of us know them today. This Showdown philosophy is not at all strictly limited to the actual works of any of those people and is more or less just a catchy phrase for the many who do not appreciate the entire minutia that goes into what I understand to be a very complicated thing. That overly simple understanding of baseball is this…It is good to get on-base.

Prediction: Two Showdown oddities are going to swing this to the White Sox. The first is Brent Lillebridge being a tank 8 because of his strong performance in limited AB’s in 2011. The second (no pun intended) is that the Indians do not have a second basemen. By tournament rules the opponent gets to pick which player plays second and can’t be subbed with -2 fielding(likely be Sizemore as a 5, speed C). That two player swing should make this an easy win for White Sox in 6 games. Masterson is good enough to beat Buehrle but likely not twice. The Indians bullpen is awful. The best thing for the Indians is the White Sox do not have the speed to make them need to play Marson over Santana and lose another bat.

Time Machine: Second Basemen

Chase Utley 2009: The Phillies back to back World Series appearances had a lot of key players. None were more important than Chase Utley. Ultey had 31 homers, 4 triples and 28 doubles for the Phillies in 2009. They would lose the 2009 World Series to the Yankees. Add that to 3 straight years of league leading HBP to help the OBP. Utley earned himself a 10, speed A(20), 18-20 HR, 16-17 2B, 15 1B with 1-5 out. For 600 points the biggest insult against this card is a +3 fielding. He is hands down the best offensive weapon to play second base in MLB Showdown.

MLB Showdown 2012: Second Base

Last year second base was not a well-rounded position. This year rejoice because we have a few players for everybody. Second base has traditionally offered Showdown players more options than shortstop. For one the physical demands defensively are less. The clear cut leader of the class is Robinson Cano leading all second basemen in home runs (33), doubles (48) and OBP (.379). Chase Utley was productive-ish in limited time though we wonder if the MVP-ish days may forever be behind him. Aaron Hill bounced back after a tough year last year while Dustin Pedroia struggled along with his teammates this year. The power options of the last few years Rickie Weeks and Dan Uggla had less power than normal but more walks than normal (21 HR, 74 BB Weeks, 19 HR, 94 BB Uggla). My preseason pick for a break out player in Dustin Ackley showed I am not much of a prognosticator with 12 homers and a sub .300 OBP. Neil Walker was being very productive when the Pirates were productive and they both got cold down the stretch.

Welcome to #Shotsfriday. Our catch all for this blog where I talk about a wide variety of none sense that doesn’t fit into the other days of the week. We also have some friendly competition that occurs but we will need for the season to start. To start us off we will have a small book club on Moneyball and how it ties into showdown.

Real Game Thursday

We love leagues around here and we want to spot light one for you guys. This was a 2011 5 man league (which sadly turned into a 4 man league mid-way through). This is a relatively small league with really talented teams across the board. When you have 600 possible cards and only 100 in use the competition isn’t too fierce. Now on to a quick summary of the league.
