MLB Showdown 2014: Corner OF +300 Points
I for
one am glad Jose Bautista is not a flash in the pan. After his 53 homer year I
was scared he was going to fall off a cliff. He hasn’t found that power again,
and by that power I mean legendary power, but 35 homers last year is legit to
go with a .403 OBP. I also am thankful that Giancarlo Stanton seems to have
made a solid recovery after the scary hit by pitch he experienced last year.
His 37 homers is a testament to how great a power hitter he is. In case anyone
was wondering Matt Holliday had 20 homers and 37 doubles in a very Matt Holiday
type year.
Power
hitters rejoice because I bring unto you the gift of Jose Bautista as an 11 OB,
18-20 HR, 17 2B with LF/RF+2 and speed B(14) for 620 points. Take him in the
first round, bat him third, love him and protect him. Thank your lucky stars a
lot of people will pick McCutchen and Trout 1-2 in your leagues. If you sadly
pick 4th or later you can snag Giancarlo Stanton as a 10 OB, 18-20
HR, 16-17 2B with LF/RF+1 and speed B(14) for 500 points. That is a pretty good
deal for a guy who can bat 3rd or fourth. Did I mention who should
bat fourth behind ether of those guys? Nelson Cruz as an 8, 15-20 HR, 12-14 2B
with LF/RF+0 and speed B(16) for 460 points your man. Obviously Bautista pairs
better with him since Jose will live on base. Justin Upton is no slouch as an
8, 17-20 HR, 13-16 2B, 12 1B+ with LF/RF+1 and speed A(20) for 410 points. He
really isn’t someone you want if you have Bautista/Stanton since his speed will
be negated by them being walked before or after him. I like him with Mike
Trout. I would take Hunter Pence if Upton was gone as an 8, 18-20 HR, 16-17 3B,
14-15 2B, 13 1B+ with LF/RF+1 and speed A(19) for 390 points.
The
Pingers don’t participate in this pay grade. Moneyballers will obviously be
interested in the 11 Bautista. After him they can look at Seth Smith as a 10
OB, 20 HR, 19 3B, 17-18 2B with LF/RF+1 and speed B(15) for 360 points. They have
also been known to like Mr. Consistency Matt Holiday as his usual 10 OB, 19-20
HR, 16-18 2B with speed B(15) and LF/RF+1 for 430 points. For four years that
card has been good enough there is no reason it won’t be for a fifth. Dickerson and Martinez will be late round
picks for people filling in their rosters. Your point situation will tell you
who you prefer.
Speed
players have a trap to avoid here. Jayson Werth as a 10 OB, 20 HR, 17-19 2B, 13-16
1B with LF/RF+1 and speed A(19) for 450 points looks like someone you can bat
fourth behind Trout/McCutchen and protect them or even bat third if you are a
cheap skate. Don’t do it, That 12 or lower walk is going to be a killer. He is
going to walk after you work so hard to steal a base and you are going to want
to do unwholesome things. He won’t score as much as you hope and drive in as
much as you hope. Starling Marte is the steal here for a productive player as a
9, 20 HR, 19 3B, 17-18 2B, 15-16 1B+ with a 8 or higher single with LF/RF+1 and
speed A(21) for 330 points. Jayson Heyward 1 less speed and 2 more walks but 1
higher fielding. I will take Marte over Heyward but if I am cheap I could live
with having both if they flanked Trout/McCutchen.
There
are no bench players at this pay grade.
