#ShotsFriday: Psychographics- MoneyBallers
Sorry
for the super Delay. I won’t recap all the shots over the past three weeks but
there is a scoreboard at the bottom from each week. Also I did not remind
people of when they had extra shots so I have a record of who I owe extra shots
to. The people who still have extra shots are @BucNfortheCard, @TheRealJohnR
and @Jmoeller05. Remember to tweet in who you think homers today. The winner of
our game gets a free color set and the 2nd place player gets a free
black and white set.
Today we are going to continue our
series on our “Psychographics”. We use psychographics to better understand why
you guys play MLB Showdown. Three weeks ago we talked about “The Homers” who
want to play with cards that represent something or someone they have an
emotional connection to. Two weeks ago we talked about “The Power Player” who
wants the most extreme emotional experiences Showdown can offer even if they
are in small quantities. Last week we talked about “The Pingers” who want as
many positive experiences from the game as possible and does not care about
magnitude of them. This week we will talk about our “Moneyball Players”.
Obviously
the name is derived from the book made into movie (which are both phenomenal if
you have not read/seen them). Before my fanatic sabermatricians jump down my
throat about the minutia of the actual Moneyball theory I will say this is for
naming purposes not for baseball statistic theory. It is not something that is
completely tied to the actual principles of sabermetrics, but something we use
so we can create MLB Showdown cards for our fans. The principle behind
Moneyballers is simple: They want to have the advantage (they want to be
rolling on their own chart).
We all
know there is a good bit of chance that occurs during and MLB Showdown game.
There are a minimum of 104 rolls of a 20 sided dice per game. I can talk in a
different article about the value of randomness to the game but that is not for
right now. The Moneyballer believes you can’t control the dice but you can
control what the dice effect. The dice should, in their minds should be
affecting your own charts. Thus you need to be on your own chart. Thus you need
the highest possible On-base.
This sounds a lot like Pingers. I
myself find I design cards for one and the other sometimes will steal it out of
necessity. They are actually the most likely Psychographics to borrow from the
others. The primary differences are Moneyballers are more willing to take on
speed C players for an extra on base, which Pingers are not. Moneyballers also
have more affinity for players who do not homer. It drives their cost down and
allows for more OB. Also Moneyballers are more likely to splurge on an 11 and
be ok with a 7 later in the order.
The way we ensure that we make
cards for our Moneyballers is we have set minimums for 11’s, 10’s and 9’s for
each set. This poses other difficulties for us. We do make custom cards from
other years and eras and sometimes their standard deviations are not the same
as the current ones. So that gets dicey. The most important thing to know is
that every year we make a set there will be two 11’s. Those are the two cards
the Moneyballer covet. We also have our set number of 9’s and 10’s which we
will not go below. Sometimes we will add additional 9’s and 10’s if the stats
look appropriate and the set needs them but we never go below our marks. It is
our way of assuring this player base there will be enough cards for them when
they go and draft.
I am sorry I was unable to make the
write-up for Shots from last week. I have no internet in my new apartment and
am stealing coffeeshop Wi-Fi before work as I type in order to send this off
(enjoying my favorite work appropriate beverage). I hope to have the updated
list up by tonight. I will also be checking the tweets and tweeting to those of
you that I see have earned an additional Shot. Please play along with us for
#ShotsFriday by tweeting using that hashtag or @MLBShowdownguru. If you tweet
the name of a player who homers in tonights games to me (before the game
starts, one per twitter) you get a point. There person with the most points at
the end of the season gets a free 2014 MLB Showdown color set. Then spend the
rest of your afternoon thinking about baseball, enjoying your favorite work
appropriate beverage.
